Playboy Mansion History: Hugh Hefner's 60-Year Empire Retrospective

Hugh Hefner moved into the Holmby Hills mansion in 1971; it became the headquarters of his Playboy empire. Through the 1970s and 1980s the mansion was symbol of mainstream-cultural power — celebrities, athletes, politicians, business figures all attended Playboy parties. The 'Mansion lifestyle' that Hefner cultivated was widely emulated in adjacent cultural production.

Through the 1990s the mansion's cultural relevance declined as adult content shifted toward Internet distribution and Playboy magazine's circulation dropped. The 2005-2010 'Girls Next Door' E! reality TV show featuring Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson briefly revived mansion's cultural visibility but in a deliberately sanitized form.

Multiple women alleged Hefner's controlling and abusive behavior; the documentary's interviews with Holly Madison and others became the dominant cultural reframing of the entire empire's legacy. Holly Madison's earlier memoir 'Down the Rabbit Hole' (2015) had foreshadowed many of these allegations but the documentary made them mainstream.
