Anonymous and Celebrity Content: The Pre-Fappening Era Retrospective

4chan's /b/ board (founded 2003) developed a specific culture of celebrity-targeting through 2007-2010. The Tom Cruise Scientology video upload (2008) and subsequent Project Chanology operation by Anonymous demonstrated how 4chan culture could organize sustained campaigns. The Anonymous raids of celebrity Twitter accounts and the early-internet doxxing campaigns established the template for systematic image-violation operations.

LulzSec's 2011 hacking campaign included Sony PSN (April-May 2011 affecting 77 million accounts), various Twitter hacks, and the broader establishment of 'hack and dump' as a recognized mode of operation. The pattern was: gain access to private data, dump it publicly for entertainment value rather than financial gain. This pattern directly preceded and informed the 2014 Fappening attacks.

Multiple smaller celebrity hacks through 2012-2014 (Scarlett Johansson 2011 case, various smaller incidents) demonstrated the technical methods that would be used in the 2014 Fappening. By late 2013, the phishing-against-iCloud attack vector was being actively explored by the hackers who would execute the August 2014 event. The infrastructure (4chan boards, dump sites, the social culture of 'reward the dump') was fully in place.

The 2014 event combined all the prior pre-history: the 4chan board culture for distribution, the Anonymous-style organization, the LulzSec-style 'hack and dump' methodology, the technical methods refined since 2011. It wasn't an unprecedented event — it was the culmination of seven years of building infrastructure and culture.

The Fappening's scale and the celebrity advocacy that followed (Jennifer Lawrence's 'sex crime' framing especially) drove the legal shifts that have constrained subsequent celebrity-content theft. The pre-2014 era's relatively open hacker-culture-celebrates-celebrity-content pattern has been substantially replaced by a more prosecution-aware environment. The infrastructure that produced 2014 still exists but the legal exposure has risen.
