Stoya tweeted: 'That thing where you log in to the internet for a second and see people idolizing the guy who raped you as a feminist. That thing sucks.' The tweet was directed at James Deen (Bryan Sevilla), her former boyfriend who had recently been profiled in feminist-aligned media as 'feminist porn star.' The tweet went viral within hours and triggered the cycle that followed.

Within days of Stoya's tweet, multiple women came forward with similar allegations: Tori Lux, Ashley Fires, Joanna Angel, Amber Rayne, Kora Peters, several others. The pattern of allegations was consistent — alleged sexual assaults during shoots and private encounters. Multiple accounts described similar dynamics and behaviors. By mid-December 2015, 9+ women had publicly come forward.

Multiple major production companies announced they would no longer work with James Deen — Kink.com, Evil Angel, Hard Candy Films, several others. Some companies maintained relationships. The industry response was unusual for the era — partial banishment without criminal proceedings or formal industry-wide ban. The Free Speech Coalition (industry trade association) did not formally sanction him.

Through 2016-2018 James Deen continued working with production companies that had not banned him. He launched his own production company. Industry attitudes were divided — some continued to work with him; others maintained the boycott. No criminal investigation produced charges. Civil cases were not filed publicly.
